Bits and Pieces

What an awesome three-day weekend! It was just the right mix of free time and activities. I got some cleaning and crafting done, and Jake and I finally played some bocce ball. Of course, the weekend was rounded out with our Weird Al show. So excited to have many more weekends like this one during my summer break!

Weird Al

Yes, you read that title correctly. :)

Our good friend, Kevin, makes guitar pedals. One of his clients is Jim Kimo West, lead guitarist for Weird Al Yankovic. Whenever the band is in town Kevin goes to the show and catches up with Jim. We got to go along for the ride this time! 

Jake was a Weird Al fan as a kid, so in his words, "My seven-year-old self is freaking out right now!" We had the privilege of going onstage before the show and watched sound check. The show itself was so fun, full of videos of Al through the years and lots of costume changes that matched the songs. We even got to meet Al briefly after the show. Such a cool experience, and those darn songs are going to be stuck in my head for quite a while...

Happy Birthday, Blog!

My blog is one year old! Truthfully, I didn't know if I would be able to stick with it, but I am very glad I have. I really enjoy sharing little pieces of my life with you, friends. I hope you enjoy it, too. :)

'50s Head Scarf

 

Today was HOT. The air conditioning units were definitely on before lunch in the Spanish room. I took precautions and chose a hair style that would be as cool as possible. I always imagine all of the housewives in the 1950s vacuuming the carpets with their hair up in a scarf. Or maybe that's just all of the Mad Men episodes talking. Anyway, here's my version.

Pick your favorite scarf. I raided my mom's collection from when she was my age and found quite a few that I really liked.

Fold the scarf in half.

Starting at the point, fold your scarf the width that you want it to be as your headband.

At the end, it should look like this.

Put the scarf around your head. Tie the two ends of the scarf in the front of your head so that the knot looks like this.

Tuck in the ends of the knot underneath the rest of the scarf so that they are hidden. At this point, you might want to use a few bobby pins in the back to make the scarf stay in place.

You're all done! Now go put on your pearls and meet Betty Draper for cards (sorry, last mention of Mad Men, promise).

Etsy, perhaps?

So, I've been sitting in the idea of starting an Etsy shop for a while now. I've been making fabric and yarn wreaths since our wedding and I think it would be an enjoyable way to earn a little extra money during summer break from school. After doing some research, starting a shop is a tad more involved than I originally thought. Shipping, taxes, returns and exchanges, eek! But I think I'm going to put on my big girl pants and give it a try. I could quite possibly gain some confidence from the experience and maybe even sell a few! I'll keep you posted on when this shop come in to existence. :)

Garden Time

 

I planted just a few plants in our little garden while the weather was so nice in March. After I planted some lettuce, I noticed all of these "weeds" coming up. Turns out those weeds were cilantro plants from last year! Who knew they would reseed? I picked some to make our guacamole last night, so I have a feeling they will come in handy this summer.

In a few weeks I plan on planting lots and lots of basil basically so I can recreate the video from Kinfolk.
